 Do not crouch¹ to-day, and worship the dead Past, whose life is fled 不要今朝屈膝，祭拜逝去的先王，他的生命

Hush² your voice in tender reverence³; 在你表示敬意的温柔声音中遁去了；

Crowned he lies, but cold and dead: For the Present reigns⁵, our monarch⁶, 对于今朝的统治者，我们的君主，

With an added weight of hours; 岁月的脚步更加沉重；

Honor her, for she is mighty⁷! 向她致敬，她是万能的！

Honor her, for she is ours! 向她致敬，因为他是我们的君主！

See the shadows of his heroes girt around her cloudy throne; 瞧，那些英雄们的身影环绕着她有些模糊的宝座；

Every day the ranks are strengthened by great hearts to him unknown; 每天行列都为他不晓得的那些忠心的人加强了；

Noble things the great Past promised, 这位伟大的先王许诺过的高尚的事情，

Holy dreams, both strange and new; 神圣的梦，奇怪又新鲜；

But the Present shall fulfill⁸ them; 但是，今朝的事情有待他们完成；

What he promised, she shall do. 他许诺的，她来做。

She inherits all his treasures, 她继承了他的所有财富，

She is heir to all his fame, 她也是他威望的继承人，

And the light that lightens round her is the luster⁹ of his name; 围在她周围的光环，就是他名字的光辉；

She is wise with all his wisdom, 拥有他所有的智慧，她因而明智，

Living on his grave she stands, 她以他的遗产为生，

On her brow she bears his laurels¹⁰, 她的眉宇间有他的殊荣，

And his harvest in her hands. 他耕种来，她收成。

Coward, can she reign⁴ and conquer if we thus her glory dim? 胆小鬼，如果我们因此认为他的光辉已经暗淡，她怎么可能统治和征服？

Let us fight for her as nobly as our fathers fought for him. 让我们为她勇敢地战斗，就像我们的父辈为他战死沙场那样。

God, who crowns the dying ages, 上帝啊，谁能在有生之年登上王位，

Bids her rule, and us obey,— 只要她来统治，我们就遵从，

Bids us cast our lives before her, 为了她能献出生命的我们，

Bids us serve the great To-day. 一切要为伟大的今朝服务。

 

1 crouch   

v.蹲伏，蜷缩，低头弯腰；n.蹲伏

2 hush

4 reign   

n.统治时期，统治，支配，盛行；v.占优势

5 reigns   

n.君主的统治( reign的名词复数 )；君主统治时期；任期；当政期

6 monarch   

n.帝王，君主，最高统治者

7 mighty   

adj.强有力的；巨大的

8 fulfill   

vt.履行，实现，完成；满足，使满意

参考例句：

9 luster   

n.光辉；光泽，光亮；荣誉
