 　　Miranda was proclaiming the possibility of loveliness, the possibility of transforming even the nightmare into something fine and noble.

　　The Deltas¹ muttered, jostled one another a little, and then were still. The threat had been effective.

　　"That's better," said the young man, and reopened his cash-box.

　　"Stop!" called the Savage in a loud and ringing voice. "Stop!"

　　“住手！”野蛮人以洪亮震响的声音大叱“住手！”

　　He pushed his way to the table; the Deltas stared at him with astonishment⁷.

　　他往桌子边挤了过去；德尔塔们吃惊地盯着他。

　　"Ford⁸!" said the Deputy Sub-Bursar, below his breath. "It's the Savage." He felt scared.

　　“福帝呀！”会计助理放低了声音说，“是野蛮人。”他害怕了。

　　"Listen, I beg of you," cried the Savage earnestly. "Lend me your ears …"

　　野蛮人急切地叫了起来。“请借给我你们的耳朵……”

　　He had never spoken in public before, and found it very difficult to express what he wanted to say.

　　以前他从来没有在大庭广众之间说过话，觉得极难表达自己的意思。

　　Don't take that horrible stuff. It's poison, it's poison.

　　"I say, Mr. Savage," said the Deputy Sub-Bursar, smiling propitiatingly. "Would you mind letting me …"
