 　　"He's mad," whispered Bernard, staring with wide open eyes.

　　“他疯了，”伯纳瞪大了眼睛盯着，悄悄地说，

　　"They'll kill him. They'll…" A great shout suddenly went up from the mob; a wave of movement drove it menacingly towards the Savage¹.

　　“他们会杀死他的。会……”人群突然大叫起来。一阵涌动把他们向野蛮人气势汹汹地推了过去。

　　"Ford² help him!" said Bernard, and averted³ his eyes.

　　“福帝保佑！”伯纳说，不敢看了。

　　"Ford helps those who help themselves." And with a laugh, actually a laugh of exultation⁴, Helmholtz Watson pushed his way through the crowd.

　　“福帝帮助自助的人！”赫姆霍尔兹·华生笑了，实际上是狂喜的笑。他推开群众，走向前去。

　　"Free, free!" the Savage shouted, and with one hand continued to throw the soma into the area while,

　　“自由！自由！”野蛮人大叫，继续用一只手把唆麻扔到院子里，

　　with the other, he punched the indistinguishable faces of his assailants.

　　同时用另一只手击打着向他袭来的面目相同的人群。

　　"Free!" And suddenly there was Helmholtz at his side–"Good old Helmholtz!"–also punching–"Men at last!"

　　“自由！”赫姆霍尔兹突然到了他的身边——“好赫姆霍尔兹，老兄！——赫姆霍尔兹也在挥着拳头——“终于做了人了！”

　　and in the interval⁵ also throwing the poison out by handfuls through the open window.

　　说着时赫姆霍尔兹也在一把一把把毒品往开着的窗户外面扔。

　　"Yes, men! men!" and there was no more poison left.

　　“是的，做了人了！做了人了！”毒品一点都不剩了。

　　He picked up the cash-box and showed them its black emptiness. "You're free!"

　　他抓起了钱箱让他们看了看那黑色的空当。

　　Howling, the Deltas⁶ charged with a redoubled fury.

　　Hesitant on the fringes of the battle.

　　伯纳在战斗的边缘犹豫了，

　　"They're done for," said Bernard and, urged by a sudden impulse, ran forward to help them; then thought better of it and halted;

　　“他们完了，”他叫。突然一阵冲动支配了他，扑上去想救他们俩，

　　then, ashamed, stepped forward again; then again thought better of it,

　　可回头一想，又停了步，随即觉得难为情了，又扑上去；

　　and was standing⁷ in an agony of humiliated⁸ indecision–thinking that they might be killed if he didn't help them,

　　再是念头一转，又站在那儿犹豫了，同时痛苦地感到可耻——他想到如果自己不去帮助，他俩可能被杀死；

　　and that he might be killed if he did–when (Ford be praised!),goggle-eyed and swine-snouted in their gas-masks, in ran the police.

　　而如果去帮助，自己又会有生命危险。正在此时，谢谢福帝！戴着鼓眼睛猪鼻子的防毒面具的警察跑了进来。
