 So Dorothy went first, holding Toto in her arms, the Tin Woodman followed, and the Scarecrow came next. 多萝茜臂抱起托托，第一个走；铁皮人跟在后面，稻草人其次。

The Lion, although he was certainly afraid, turned to face the Kalidahs,  狮子虽然惊恐至极，但却转过身来面对着开力大，

and then he gave so loud and terrible a roar that Dorothy screamed and the Scarecrow fell over backward,  发出一声尖锐的可怕的怒吼，多萝茜害怕地尖叫着，稻草人向后倒退一步，

while even the fierce beasts stopped short and looked at him in surprise. 这时候那凶猛的开力大突然停步，惊奇地看着。

But, seeing they were bigger than the Lion, and remembering that there were two of them and only one of him,  但是开力大意识到自己的实力明显比狮子强大，而且它们是两个，

the Kalidahs again rushed forward, and the Lion crossed over the tree and turned to see what they would do next. 狮子只是一个，于是向前冲去。狮子跨过了树，转过身来看着它们。

Without stopping an instant the fierce beasts also began to cross the tree. 那凶猛的野兽却紧追不舍，也要跨过树来。

And the Lion said to Dorothy, " We are lost, for they will surely tear us to pieces with their sharp claws. 狮子害怕地对多萝茜说，“我们都要完蛋了，它们一定会用那血盆大口，将我们撕成碎片，

But stand close behind me, and I will fight them as long as I am alive." 不过请你站在我后面，只要我还活着，我就要和它们搏斗到底。”

"Wait a minute!" called the Scarecrow. 稻草人喊道：“不要急！”

He had been thinking what was best to be done, and now he asked the Woodman to chop away the end of the tree that rested on their side of the ditch. 他已经想出了一个好办法来，他让铁皮人砍掉在他们壕沟这边的树梢。

The Tin Woodman began to use his axe¹ at once, and, just as the two Kalidahs were nearly across,  铁皮人马上动手砍着，正当两只开力大快要跨过来时，这树发出一声砰訇，

the tree fell with a crash into the gulf², carrying the ugly, snarling³ brutes⁴ with it, and both were dashed to pieces on the sharp rocks at the bottom. 带着那两只丑陋凶暴咆哮着的野兽，掉进深沟里去了。它们都摔在沟底下尖锐的石块上粉身碎骨啦。

1 axe
