 So the Woodman took his axe¹ and began to chop down small trees to make a raft,  铁皮人拿起斧头，他开始砍下小树做木筏，

and while he was busy at this the Scarecrow found on the riverbank a tree full of fine fruit.  他正忙碌时，稻草人发现河边的一棵树上结满了佳果。

This pleased Dorothy, who had eaten nothing but nuts all day, and she made a hearty² meal of the ripe fruit. 这就使多萝茜很快活，她这几天除了硬壳果以外，没有别的东西吃，便用成熟的水果做了一顿滋养的食品。

But it takes time to make a raft, even when one is as industrious³ and untiring as the Tin Woodman, and when night came the work was not done.  然而做成一个木筏需要花很长时间，即使像铁皮人那样勤劳，不知疲倦，直到深夜，工作还是没有完成。

So they found a cozy⁴ place under the trees where they slept well until the morning;  他们只好在树下面找一个舒服的地方，一直睡到第二天早晨；

and Dorothy dreamed of the Emerald City, and of the good Wizard Oz, who would soon send her back to her own home again. 多萝茜梦见了翡翠城，还有仁慈的魔术家奥芝，要立刻把她送回堪萨斯洲去。
