 "Good-bye!" he called after them, and they were very sorry to leave him. “再会了！”他在他们的后面喊着，他们丢了一个伙伴，觉得很难受。

Indeed, the Tin Woodman began to cry, but fortunately remembered that he might rust¹, 的确是这样，铁皮人开始哭了，然而幸亏他记得他会发锈了，

and so dried his tears on Dorothy's apron². 便在多萝茜的围裙上抹掉了眼泪。

Of course this was a bad thing for the Scarecrow. 无疑，这对于稻草人是一件不幸的事情。

"I am now worse off than when I first met Dorothy," he thought. " “现在我比当初遇见多萝茜的时候更糟了，”他想。

Then, I was stuck on a pole in a cornfield, where I could make-believe scare the crows, at any rate. “虽然，我被吊起在稻田晨的竹竿上，不管怎么说，在那里我还是伪装着一个人，吓走乌鸦们，

But surely there is no use for a Scarecrow stuck on a pole in the middle of a river. 但是在这里，一个稻草人戳起在河中的一根木杆子，是根本没有用处的。

I am afraid I shall never have any brains, after all!" 我将永远得不到脑子了！”

Down the stream the raft floated, and the poor Scarecrow was left far behind. 急流继续把木筏向下冲，可怜的稻草人，远远地落在他们后面。

Then the Lion said: "Something must be done to save us. 狮子说：“我们必须想法子，否则，只有死路一条。

I think I can swim to the shore and pull the raft after me, if you will only hold fast to the tip of my tail." 我愿意游到河岸边，把木筏拖在我的后面，只要你们拉紧我的尾巴。”

So he sprang into the water, and the Tin Woodman caught fast hold of his tail. 于是他跳入水中，铁皮人紧紧抓住了他的尾巴。

Then the Lion began to swim with all his might toward³ the shore. 狮子用全身的力量游向河对岸。

It was hard work, although he was so big; 狮子身体这么大，对他也是艰难的工作，

but by and by they were drawn⁴ out of the current, and then Dorothy took the Tin Woodman's long pole and helped push the raft to the land. 但是过了一会儿，他们摆脱了这股急流，多萝茜拿起铁皮人的长木杆，把木筏推向岸边去。

They were all tired out when they reached the shore at last and stepped off upon the pretty green grass, 终于，他们到达了岸边，一步步踏上那美丽的绿草地时，都累极了，

and they also knew that the stream had carried them a long way past the road of yellow brick⁵ that led to the Emerald City. 并且知道急流带他们走了很长段路，远离了到翡翠城去的黄砖路。

"What shall we do now?" asked the Tin Woodman, as the Lion lay down on the grass to let the sun dry him. 狮子躺在草地上，晒太阳，铁皮人问：“下一步我们要做些什么？”

"We must get back to the road, in some way," said Dorothy. “不管怎么样，我们一定要回到黄砖路上去，”多萝茜说。

"The best plan will be to walk along the riverbank until we come to the road again," remarked the Lion. 狮子说：“最好是沿着河岸走，就可以走回黄砖路了。”

So, when they were rested, Dorothy picked up her basket and they started along the grassy⁶ bank, to the road from which the river had carried them. 当他们休息够了，多萝茜便提起她的篮子，沿着长满杂草的堤岸动身，到达河水带他们来的路上，

It was a lovely country, with plenty of flowers and fruit trees and sunshine to cheer them, 那是一个可爱的地方，有开遍山野的花朵和挂满枝头的果子，太阳光温暖地洒在他们身上，

and had they not felt so sorry for the poor Scarecrow, they could have been very happy. 如果他们不是想到，稻草人还挂在水中央的杆上，他们将非常的快乐了。

They walked along as fast as they could, Dorothy only stopping once to pick a beautiful flower; 他们尽快地向前走，多萝茜也只停了一次，去摘取一朵美丽的花；

and after a time the Tin Woodman CRIed out: "Look!" 走了一会儿，铁皮人大声喊了出来：“看呀！”

Then they all looked at the river and saw the Scarecrow perched upon his pole in the middle of the water, looking very lonely and sad. 他们一起向河里望去，看见稻草人孤零零地抱着插在河中的木杆上，非常沮丧而难过。

"What can we do to save him?" asked Dorothy. 多萝茜问：“我们用什么办法救出他？”

The Lion and the Woodman both shook their heads, for they did not know. 狮子和铁皮人无奈地摇了摇他们的头，他们不知道怎么办。

So they sat down upon the bank and gazed⁷ wistfully at the Scarecrow until a Stork⁸ flew by, who, upon seeing them, stopped to rest at the water's edge. 他们就在岸滩上坐下来，忧愁地盯着稻草人，后来有一只鹳鸟飞过时看见了他们，它在水边停下来休息。
