 As they walked on, the green glow became brighter and brighter, 他们继续往前走，绿色的光愈来愈亮了，

and it seemed that at last they were nearing the end of their travels. 似乎他们终于接近了他们充满希望的翡翠城。

Yet it was afternoon before they came to the great wall that surrounded the City. 下午，他们跑到围绕着城墙的大城前。

It was high and thick and of a bright green color. 那城墙又高又厚，涂着鲜亮的绿色。

In front of them, and at the end of the road of yellow brick, was a big gate, 在他们的面前，是那条黄砖路的尽头，一扇大大的城门，

all studded with emeralds that glittered so in the sun that even the painted eyes of the Scarecrow were dazzled by their brilliancy. 在阳光下，到处都是闪闪发光的翡翠，哪怕稻草人是一双画出来的眼睛，也被那耀眼的光茫所眩迷了。

There was a bell beside the gate, and Dorothy pushed the button and heard a silvery tinkle¹ sound within. 在城门旁边，装着一个铃，多萝茜揿着按钮，听到里面响起一阵银铃的丁玲玲声。

Then the big gate swung slowly open, and they all passed through and found themselves in a high arched room, 于是那大门晃动着，缓缓地打开来了，他们毫不犹豫地走了进去，发现他们自己正走在一间高拱形的房子里，

the walls of which glistened² with countless³ emeralds. 周围的墙壁上镶嵌着无数的翡翠，耀出光来。

Before them stood a little man about the same size as the Munchkins. 一个和芒奇金人一般大的矮男人，站在他们的前面。

He was clothed all in green, from his head to his feet, 他浑身上下都是绿色的服饰，

and even his skin was of a greenish tint⁴. 即使他的皮肤也似乎是一种浅绿色的。

At his side was a large green box. 在他的身边，放着一只大绿箱。

When he saw Dorothy and her companions the man asked, "What do you wish in the Emerald City?" 当他看见了多萝茜和她的朋友们时，这人就问道：“你们为什么来到翡翠城中？”

"We came here to see the Great Oz," said Dorothy. 多萝茜说：“我们不远千里到这里，请求伟大的奥芝接见。”

The man was so surprised at this answer that he sat down to think it over. 这人听了这个回答吓了一跳，他突然坐下去仔细地想。
