　　第三章 逃走

　　The barn was very large.

　　谷仓很大。

　　It was very old.

　　它很旧了。

　　It smelled of hay

　　里面有干草的气味，

　　and it smelled of manure¹.

　　有肥料的气味。

　　It smelled of the perspiration² of tired horses

　　里面有干活累了的马的汗味，

　　and the wonderful sweet breath of patient cows.

　　有吃苦耐劳的母牛的极好闻的气息。

　　It often had a sort of peaceful smell

　　谷仓让人闻上去感到天下太平，

　　as though nothing bad could happen ever again in the world.

　　什么坏事都不会再发生。

　　It smelled of grain and of harness dressing³ and of axle grease

　　它充满了谷物、马具套、车轴油、

　　and of rubber boots and of new rope.

　　橡胶靴和新绳索的气味。

　　And whenever the cat was given a fish-head to eat,

　　如果猫叼着给它的鱼头来这儿享受，

　　the barn would smell of fish.

　　谷仓里还留有鱼腥气。

　　But mostly it smelled of hay,

　　不过最强烈的是干草气味，

　　for there was always hay in the great loft⁴ up overhead.

　　因为在楼顶上面的阁楼里一直堆着干草。

　　And there was always hay being pitched down

　　总是有干草给扔下来

　　to the cows and the horses and the sheep.

　　喂牛、喂马、喂羊。

1 manure   

n.粪，肥，肥粒；vt.施肥

2 perspiration

3 dressing

• The children enjoy dressing up in mother's old clothes.孩子们喜欢穿上妈妈旧时的衣服玩。

4 loft   

n.阁楼，顶楼

参考例句：

• We could see up into the loft from bottom of the stairs.我们能从楼梯脚边望到阁楼的内部。
• By converting the loft,they were able to have two extra bedrooms.把阁楼改造一下，他们就可以多出两间卧室。
