 　　"You asked for water," said Lurvy meekly¹. “都是你叫我拿水来的。”勒维逆来顺受地说。

　　"I didn't ask for a shower bath," said Mr. Zuckerman. “我可没叫你给我冲凉。”朱克曼先生说。

　　The crowd roared with laughter. 周围的人群哈哈大笑。

　　Finally Mr. Zuckerman had to laugh, too. 最后朱克曼先生也只好笑。

　　And of course Avery was tickled² to find himself so wet, 当然，艾弗里看到自己给淋得湿透，

　　and he immediately started to act like a clown. 只有高兴的份，马上手舞足蹈扮小丑。

　　He pretended he was taking a shower bath; 他装作冲凉，

　　he made faces and danced around and rubbed imaginary soap under his armpits. 做鬼脸，跳来跳去，在胳肢窝里假装擦肥皂，

　　"Avery, stop it!" cried his mother. "Stop showing off!" “艾弗里，你下来，别这样！”他妈妈大叫，“别出洋相了。”

　　But the crowd loved it. 可是众人爱看这个。

　　Avery heard nothing but the applause. 艾弗里别的听不见，只听到拍手喝彩声。

　　He liked being a clown in a ring, with everybody watching, in front of a grandstand. 他就爱在众目睽睽之下，在大看台前面的圆围栏里扮小丑。

　　When he discovered there was still a little water left in the bottom of the pail, 他发现桶底还剩有一点水，

　　he raised the pail high in the air and dumped the water on himself and made faces. 干脆把桶举高，把水浇在自己身上，做怪脸。

　　The children in the grandstand screamed with appreciation³. 大看台上的小朋友们看得尖声高叫，满意得不得了。

　　At last things calmed down. 最后，一切平静下来。

　　Wilbur was loaded into the truck. 威尔伯给装上了卡车。

　　Avery was led from the ring by his mother 艾弗里让他妈妈从圆围栏里给拉了出来，

　　and placed on the seat of  the truck to dry off. 坐到卡车座位上让身子干透。

　　The truck, driven by Mr. Arable⁴, crawled slowly back to the pigpen. 卡车由阿拉布尔先生慢慢地开回猪圈。

　　Avery's wet trousers made a big wet spot on the seat. 艾弗里的湿裤子把车上的座位弄湿了一大片。
