 January 5th 2000. The US government decides six-year-old Elian Gonzalez should be returned to his father in Cuba. That move touches off angry protests  by Cuban Americans in Miami, home of Elian’s US relatives. After a legal battle, the government seizes Elian from those relatives months later and the boy returns to Cuba.

1925. Nellie T. Ross succeeds her late husband as a governor in Wyoming, becoming the first female governor in American history.

1998. I got you baby. Sonny Bono, pop star-turned-politician after striking a tree while skiing in South Lake Tahoe California. He was 62.

2004. After 14 years of denials, Pete Rose publicly admits he bet on baseball while he was Manager of the Cincinnati Reds.
