July 22nd, 1933. Aviator1 Wiley Post completes the first solo flight around the world in 7 days 18 and 3/4 hours. 1934. Federal agents shoot to death a man identified as John Dillinger outside a movie theater in Chicago. Dillinger has been declared Public Enemy No.1 for his Midwest bank robberies during the Great Depression.
2003. In Iraq, Saddam Hussein’s sons Odai and Qusai are killed in a gun battle with US troops in the northern city of Mosul. That happens a few months after an America-led invasion topples Saddam’s regime from power. Months later, US soldiers capture Saddam. He is hanged in December, 2006 after he’s convicted of crimes against humanity.
2004. The 9.11 Commission’s final report details US government failures in preventing the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. Commission Chair, Thomas Kean:
