　　Look at that poor old man. He sits at the tree by the side¹ of the road. 看那位可怜的老人。他坐在路边的树旁。

　　He has come a long way, and now he wants rest and food. 他走了很远的路，现在需要休息和食物。

　　His dog sits by his side, and waits for a share³ of the poor man's food. 他的狗坐在他的旁边，等着能从这可怜的老人那儿分点食吃。

　　Come, old man, take some bread and meat out of your bag, and eat. Then give a bit⁴ of meat to your poor dog. 来，老先生，从你的包里拿出点儿面包和肉来吃吧。然后给你可怜的狗也吃一口。

　　The old man once had⁵ a son, and this dog was⁶ his. But the son is dead⁷, and now the dog lives with the old man. 这位老人曾经有一个儿子，这条狗是他儿子的。但如今他的儿子死了，于是这条狗就跟着老人一起生活。

　　The old man is kind to the dog, and says that as² long as he has bread and meat the dog shall⁸ get its share. 老人对这狗很好，他说只要他自己有面包和肉吃，他的狗也会有份吃的。

　　Let us go and ask the old man to come in. Jane will bring him some warm food. 让我们去把这老年人请进来，简会给他端上些热乎乎的食物。

　　Come in, old man, and sit by the fire and rest. 进来，老先生，请坐在火旁休息吧。
