Ukraine’s new government says it’s making contingency1 plans to withdraw its troops and their families from Crimea following Russian moves to annex2 the peninsula. The country’s Foreign Minister Andrii Deshchytsya told the BBC the government was very concerned about the safety of is citizens. The Ukrainian Security Chief Andriy Parubiy said they wanted to be able to move people quickly and efficiently3 to mainland Ukraine.

But, he said, he fully14 expects that there will be an order that will come through tomorrow morning for them to withdraw.

Syrian opposition15 activists say rebel fighters have taken control of a prison outside the city of Gharaz. The UK based Syrian observatory16 for human rights says the rebels seized the prison after a long battle with government forces. Dozens of inmates17 are reported to have been released.
