　　My niece Helen was a typist and her eyes were not very good, so she usually worn¹ glasses. But when was nineteen and began to go out with a young Russian man, a son of a leading politician². She never worn glasses when she was with him. Whenever he came to the door to take her out. She would take her glasses off and when she got back home again and he left she would put them on.

　　我的侄女海伦是名打字员，她视力不太好，所以她通常都带着眼镜。她十九岁时和一个俄国的小伙子交朋友。他是一个政治家领袖的儿子。海伦和她男朋友在一起时，从不戴眼镜。每当男朋友到门口接她外出时，她就摘下眼镜；回到家里，男朋友走了以后，海伦才戴上眼镜。

　　One day her mother asked her: "Helen, why do you never wear glasses when you out with Jim? Every day he takes you to such lovely places in his car, but you are almost blind and you can not see anything”.

　　有一天妈妈问她：“海伦，你和吉姆在一起时为什么从不戴眼镜？每天他开车带你去很多美丽的地方玩儿，可你几乎是个瞎子，什么也看不见。”

　　"Well, mother," Helen went downstairs and said, "There is no doubt he is very rich. But I look prettier to Jim while I am not wearing my glasses and he looks better to me, too."

　　海伦从楼上下来说：“嗯，妈妈，毫无疑问吉姆很富有，但我不戴眼镜时他看着我更漂亮些，同时我也觉得他更顺眼一些。”
