　　An investment counselor¹ decided² to go out on her own. She was shrewd and diligent³, so business kept coming in, and pretty soon she realized that she needed an in-house counsel. She began to interview young lawyers.

　　一个投资顾问决定自己干，她够精明和勤奋，所以她的生意蒸蒸日上。不久以后她就意识到自己需要一个法律顾问。于是她开始面试年轻的律师。

　　"As I'm sure you can understand," she started off with one of the first applicants⁴, "in business like this, our personal integrity must be beyond question."

　　“我确信你一定能够理解，”她开始和第一个应聘者面谈，“做我们这一行的，他个人的诚实信用一定要毫无瑕疵。”

　　She leaned forward. "Mr. Peterson, are you an 'honest' lawyer?"

　　"Honest?" replied the job prospect⁵. "Let me tell you something about honest. Why, I'm so honest that my father lent me $15,000 for my education, and I paid back every penny the minute I tried my first case."

　　"Impressive. And what sort of case was that?"

　　The young lawyer squirmed in his seat and admitted, "He sued me for the money."

1 counselor
