For the first time in 80 years, a new species of orangutan has been discovered in the rugged¹ highland² forests in western Sumatra. The species has already been classified as endangered as it faces threats to its natural habitat. There are about 800 Tapanuli orangutans residing on land protected by the Indonesian government, but a proposed hydroelectric dam along a river nearby would flood part of their habitat and split up the population. The dam could also bring more humans to the area which would increase the likelihood of hunting.

苏门答腊岛西部发现了新的猩猩物种。这是80年来人类首次发现猩猩的新物种。这些猩猩生活在崎岖高原上的深山密林中。这个物种被列为濒危物种，因为其栖息地面临着威胁。印尼政府保护区内，生活着大约800只达巴奴里猩猩。但是一项提案提议要在附近的一条河上建设水电站坝，这样它们的一部分栖息地就会被淹没，这些达巴奴里猩猩会被分隔两地。这座大坝建成后，也会吸引更多人类来到这里，增加了偷猎的可能。
