Digital Trends reports hackers¹ compromised Microsoft's web-based email services for months, including Outlook.com accounts and MSN and Hotmail addresses.

In an email sent to affected³ users, Microsoft said that the hackers were possibly able to access email addresses, subject lines of emails, folder⁴ labels, and the names of other email addresses that the user contacted.

While it's known the security breach⁵ took place between January 1 and March 28, it's unclear how many users were hit by the data breach, and who the hackers behind the attack are.
