Sip¹作为名词和动词都表示“啜饮”。例如：
He took one sip of the wine
他抿了一口酒。
When you drink your soup, don't sip it, but swallow it all in one mouthful.
喝汤时不要啜饮,而应一口吞下去。
Compare是“比较、比喻”的意思，我们平时说的最多的短语就是compare with和compare to了，两个词组意思很不一样。
Compare ... with 是“把……和……比较”的意思。例如：
We must compare the present with the past. 我们要把现在和过去比较一下。
Compare to 是“把……比作”的意思。例如：
We compare him to a little tiger. 我们把他比作小老虎。
He compared London to Paris. 他把伦敦比作巴黎。
London is large, compared with Paris. 同巴黎比较而言，伦敦大些。

Torture表示“拷问；（使）痛苦”。比如：
She suffered tortures from a toothache.
她受着牙痛的折磨。

Hell的基本意思是“地狱”，前面通常不加任何冠词。引申表示“极端痛苦的境地,受苦受难的地方,极不愉快的经历”。
The boss really gave me hell today. 老板今天着实数落了我一通。
这个例句中的give sb. hell表示申斥〔惩罚,骚扰〕某人。
The journey was absolute hell. 一路上吃尽了苦头.
有时hell还可用作感叹词,表示愤怒、惊讶或用以加强语气。
Oh hell! The car broke down again. 噢,该死!车子又拋锚了。
The hell可表示“到底,究竟”,主要用在what,where,when,who,how之后,相当于on earth，表示一种强烈的语气。
What the hell do you think you are doing? 你认为你究竟在干什么?

adj.有薄雾的，朦胧的；不肯定的，模糊的

4 odds   

n.让步，机率，可能性，比率；胜败优劣之别

参考例句：

• Do you know the odds of winning the lottery once?你知道赢得一次彩票的几率多大吗？

5 scattered   

adj.分散的，稀疏的；散步的；疏疏落落的

参考例句：

• Gathering up his scattered papers,he pushed them into his case.他把散乱的文件收拾起来，塞进文件夹里。

6 lighting   

n.照明，光线的明暗，舞台灯光

参考例句：

• The gas lamp gradually lost ground to electric lighting.煤气灯逐渐为电灯所代替。
• The lighting in that restaurant is soft and romantic.那个餐馆照明柔和而且浪漫。
