China has set new goals for ecological and environmental protection in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, highlighting concerted efforts to control air and water pollution, and the conservation of resources.
Under the plan, particles of PM2.5 -- in the heavily-polluted north-east region -- will be cut to 73 micrograms per cubic meters by 2017, and 64 micrograms per cubic meter by 2020.
It's also an aim to have drinking water, in regional prefecture level cities and above, at the third level for water quality. Level One to Level Three means water quality is suitable for drinking, aquatic breeding, fisheries and swimming.
The region will also phase out industrial projects that would give rise to heavy water pollution by the end of 2016, and scrap all vehicles that do not meet national emission standards by 2017.
