CPPCC Standing committee member Chen Xiwen -- who is overseeing China's agricultural reform -- gave us more details on how the country will deal with the supply-side issue in the sector.
"There are three major areas where we can push forward supply-side reform in the agricultural sector. First, to achieve the supply-demand balance of grain products, we need to improve and stabilize grain production capabilities. Second, we need to further adjust the various structures of grain products, in order to better adapt to market needs. Third, if our products don't have competitive prices, grain products from international markets will come in."
"So we should focus more on innovation and reform in the sector. Technological innovation can turn out better strains of grain, which will reduce production costs and improve efficiency. In addition, there should be reform and innovation in the current system and mechanisms. As we all know, we are actively pushing forward in the pricing, subsidizing and storage mechanisms of key grain products," Chen Xiwen said.
