China has intensified its anti-corruption drive and punished a large number of corrupt officials over the past three years. In the work reports this morning, China's Chief Justice and Procurator-General outlined the judicial authorities' efforts in maintaining "high pressure" on corruption in 2015.
"The People's courts at all levels concluded 34-thousand graft trials, with 49,000 people involved. The accused included 134 former officials at prefecture level and above. And we have improved the trial process against corrupt officials who have fled China in accordance with the law, and take active part in pursuing fugitives and recovering assets," said Zhou Qiang, head of the Supreme People's Court.
"The procuratorial organs have highlighted investigating and prosecuting major graft cases. 41 ex-officials at ministerial level and above were investigated by prosecutors in accordance with the law. And a total of 22 former officials at ministerial level and above, including former senior official Zhou Yongkang, were prosecuted," said Cao Jianming, Procurator-General of the Supreme People's Procuratorate.
