China's Special Envoy for Syria, Xie Xiaoyan has said patience and confidence are needed for the Syrian peace talks. Xie met with special representatives and diplomats involved in the peace talks during his two-day visit to Switzerland, and exchanged views with the parties involved.
"My overall feeling is that this negotiation encountered many problems, and the process was not that smooth. I think we should pay attention to all these problems. The overall situation neither completely changed, nor qualitatively changed. Of course, this is a very complicated issue which involves multiple aspects and different interests that either overlap or contradict with each other. There is no way to resolve so many problems all at once. We also consider a re-occurrence of problems as normal.
"First, it is not China's concern whether President Assad should go or not. Secondly, this is Syria's internal affair, and it is the Syrian people who decide whether he should go or not, rather than outside opinions or interference. I think this issue shouldn't be an obstacle to the peace talks. We should have the wisdom to remove it instead of fixating on it."
"No matter whether it is the Syria issue or any other hotspot issues, China always maintains a positive attitude and plays its role as a facilitator for peace and negotiations. China will contribute its wisdom and solutions. As a matter of fact, ever since the Syria crisis broke out, China has made many efforts, which have had a positive influence on the peace talks. China will continue to play this role and make more efforts, including pushing forward negotiations and providing humanitarian assistance," Xie said.
