　　At first sight it seems as if the Americans were very foolish to fight the British. 看起来美洲人与英国开战似乎非常愚蠢。

　　There were five or six times as many people in the British Isles¹ as there were in the continental² colonies. 在人口数量上，不列颠群岛相当于大陆殖民地的五六倍；

　　The British government had a great standing³ army. 英国政府拥有一支庞大的陆军常备军，

　　The Americans had no regular army. 美洲人没有正规的军队；
