From South Africa to India, Australia to Canada, English Premier1 League football is watched by tens of millions. Here in Britain the rights to broadcast the matches for the next three years have just been auctioned2. Sky and BT will be showing the games. And they’ve paid what to many may appear to be a staggering3 amount.

The value that’s been delivered for the three seasons will be 5.136 billion pounds. When I sat in this room three years ago, the surprise was the introduction of BT. Probably that number will again be probably the surprise of this particular round.

That was the Premier League chief executive4 Richard Scudamore. Our sports news correspondent5 was at the meeting when the deal was announced. He told us more.

We were all absolutely be staggered6 by that figure when Richard Scudamore mentioned 5.136 billion pounds. That’s 7.8 billion dollars. We’re expecting it to be an increase on the last round, which started in 2013. But it’s been a seventy percent increase. We expected a 45 maybe 50 percent increase. So we were absolutely shocked when he gave that figure, which of course is good news for the clubs. It’s good news for the players. Presumably7 it will translate into higher wages for them, probably more money for agents, as well, and those people that sell Ferrari, so everybody in the football world rubbing their hands with glee of, you know, English football’s golden era seems to go on and on and on.

And we’ll come to them in a minute. But you said you were shocked by the size of the increase. Why is it such a big increase?

Well, the most of this has been paid for by Sky. Sky and BT had the deal the last time round. They shared the message. They’ve kept hold of that. Football is key to Sky’s business.

And what is this going to mean to fans and the grassroots?

Well, for fans it may, you know, it may mean that subscription8 rates could rise. And lots of people acrossEngland are saying, “Come on, give us some money so we can improve football at grassroots level.” So there may be a bit of that. For the teams, they’ll have more money to spend on players. So the Premier League should in theory become more competitive9, could outmuscle the other big leagues in Europe. It’s a very interesting period. But this is the biggest football deal, the television football deal in history.
