Egypt's president has approved strigent new counter-terrorism measures seeking to strengthen the country's ability to respond to the Islamic militant1 insurgency2. Rihgts groups say President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi will use the legislation to crash dissent3, lock up his opponents and impose further restrictions4 on freedom of exspression. Ben L reports.

In that time Egypt has also seen as considerable deterioration6 of its human rights record. President Sisi is under presure to crack insurgency in Sinai and combat what he sees as a political threat from the Muslim Brotherhood7. The trial process for suspected terrorist leaders will now be speeded up and those found guilty face the death penalty. Any journalist who now contradicts an official account of militant attack can expect a fine of at least 25,000 dollars.
Anti-government protesters in Brazil have been demanding impeachment8 of President Dilma Rousseff in demonstrations10 across the country. They are blaming President Rousseff for an economic downturn and for one of the biggest corruption12 scandals in Brazil's history. Prosecutors13 alleged14 that firms paid corrupt11 politicians from the governing Workers' Party to get lucrative15 contracts with the state-owned oil giant Petrobras. President Rousseff, who at that time chaired Petrobras, has not been accused of doing anything illegal. These protesters explained why they were marching.

Security has tightened16 at polling stations across Sri Lanka as voting gets underway shortly in the general election. United States Federal Aviation Authority, the FAA, said a recent software upgraded an air traffic control center in Virgenia may have led to the cancellations of more than 400 flights on Saturday. Scientists studying how owls24 are able to swoop25 on their prey26 undetected have discovered that, unlike other birds, they are able to suppress the noise of flying. The researchers from Dalian University of Technology in China described the owls as "the king of acoustic27 stealth ". Rebecca G reports.
"It was already known that owls have feathers that absorb aerodynamic sound when gliding28. But the new study found that they also suppress the mechanical noise caused by the vibrations29 that occur when the owl23 flap its wings. The report's authors say their findings could help engineers develop special materials and structures to help reduce noise created by machines such as wind turbines."
