Guo Boxiong, a retired¹ general who ran China’s military, is being investigated for corruption² on charges of accepting bribes³ on his own and through his family, according to the official state media outlet⁴ Xinhua.

Guo, 73, served as a vice⁵ chairman of Central Military Commission under the ruling Communist Party for eight years before he retired in November 2012 and he is the highest-ranking military official to be felled in the anti-corruption campaign.

An investigation⁶ into Xu Caihou, the second most senior military official to have been placed under a corruption inquiry⁷, continues despite his death from bladder cancer in March.

Sources close to the military said Guo was informed that he was under investigation for party discipline violations⁸ in April.
