The explosion happened during a shift change, so more than 700 miners were inside, at least 200 are still trapped.

Rescuers have been working through the night, battling clouds of soot¹ and gas from the fires still burning underground.

Families are anxiously waiting outside the mine in western Turkey, wailing² in grief as the dead are pulled out.

Some of the workers are trapped more than 400 yards below the surface, with no power to operate the elevators that would usually bring them up.
