U.S. employers added only 126,000 jobs to payrolls¹ in March, the lowest number since December of 2013, almost half of what was expected.

The unemployment rate held steady at 5.5 percent.

Updated figures from the Labor Department show job growth was weaker earlier this year than first thought, with the economy adding 69,000 fewer jobs in January and February than previously⁴ estimated.
