The development of Beijing has left a bubble² economy in housing³ construction as more people move into the city. This bubble economy has arisen because the Chinese people are now beginning to enjoy economic freedom and their spending power has increased. This can be seen in the increase in construction of new apartment buildings. Many of these buildings already have their apartments sold and are only waiting to be completed. People buy uncompleted apartments mainly because the price will be lower, as the builders already have guaranteed profit. Many things can inhibit⁴ the price of a house. If a new apartment block is surrounded by too much low-cost housing, this will surely affect the price of the house or apartment. Developers trying to combat⁵ this are buying up large areas with low-cost housing in an attempt to beautify the area around new construction. This makes it easier for real estate agencies⁶ to sell, because of a more attractive location. These new apartments are usually quite expensive, which keeps many people from enjoying them. Because of this, secondhand apartments are also seeing new life. Despite the rate of construction, the demand is low because the price is too high. To solve this problem, the government is working to lower the high cost of housing.

语法小结 Grammar

由连接代词、副词who, why, how, when等引导的宾语从句。

由连接代词who, whom, whose, what, which和连接副词when, where, how, why等引导的宾语从句表示特殊疑问句的意义。除了连接词及被修饰的词提前以外，宾语从句采用陈述句语序。如：

Tom asked who could give the message to his mother.

汤姆问谁可以带个口信儿给他妈妈。

Do you know what he said just now?

你知道他刚才说什么了吗？

Do you know why he said that?

你知道他为什么说那个吗？

宾语从句的时态一般遵循以下原则：

1.当主句是现在时或将来时的时候，宾语从句可以用所需要的任何时态

Show me what you’ve bought. 让我看看你买了什么。

2.主句是过去时，宾语从句一般只能用过去时的某种形式

She was shocked by what he said. 她为他所说的感到震惊。

She was shocked by what she had seen. 她为所看到的感到震惊。

1 estate   

n.所有地，地产，庄园；住宅区；财产，资产

参考例句：

• My estate lies within a mile.我的地产离那有一英里。
• The great real estate brokers do far more than this.而优秀的房地产经纪人做得可比这多得多。

2 bubble   

n.泡，水泡，气泡；泡影，妄想；v.(使)起泡

参考例句：

• The water begins to bubble.水开始起泡了。
• Their hopes of success have burst like a bubble.他们成功的希望已经成了泡影。

3 housing   

n.房屋，住宅；住房建筑；外壳，外罩

参考例句：

4 inhibit   

vt.阻止，妨碍，抑制

参考例句：

• They passed a law to inhibit people from parking in the street.他们通过一项法令以阻止人们在街上停车。

5 combat   

n.战斗，斗争，格斗；vt.与...斗争，与...战斗

参考例句：

• The police are now using computers to help combat crime.警方现在使用电脑打击犯罪活动。
• A reporter interviewed the combat hero.记者访问了这位战斗英雄。

6 agencies   

n.代理( agency的名词复数 )；服务机构；（政府的）专门机构；代理（或经销）业务（或关系）

参考例句：
