 　　"Now, who wants a chocolate éclair?" she asked in a loud, cheerful tone.

　　"Me!" yelled the entire Bokanovsky Group in chorus.

　　Bed 20 was completely forgotten.

　　"Oh, God, God, God …" the Savage¹ kept repeating to himself.

　　“啊，上帝呀，上帝呀，上帝呀……”野蛮人不断自言自语。

　　In the chaos² of grief and remorse³ that filled his mind it was the one articulate word. "God!" he whispered it aloud. "God …"

　　野蛮人不断自言自语。他的心灵充满了痛苦与悔恨，在混沌之中唯一清楚的声音就是上帝。“上帝！”他低声地叫了出来。“上帝……”

　　"Whatever is he saying?" said a voice, very near, distinct and shrill⁴ through the warblings of the Super-Wurlitzer.

　　“他究竟在说些什么呀？”一个声音在说，那声音很近，很清楚，很尖利，从超高音的伍丽策婉转的歌声里穿透出来。

　　The Savage violently started and, uncovering his face, looked round.

　　野蛮人猛然转过身子，放开了脸上的手，四面看了看。

　　Five khaki twins, each with the stump⁵ of a long éclair in his right hand,

　　五个穿咔叽制服的多生子站成一排，哈巴狗一样瞪着他，每人右手拿着半截条糕，

　　and their identical faces variously smeared⁶ with liquid chocolate, were standing⁷ in a row, puggily goggling⁸ at him.

　　融化了的巧克力在他们一模一样的脸上染出不同形状的污迹。

　　They met his eyes and simultaneously⁹ grinned. One of them pointed¹⁰ with his éclair butt¹¹.

　　他们一见到他的眼睛就同时傻笑起来。其中一个用残剩的条糕指着琳妲。

　　"Is she dead?" he asked.

　　“她死了吗？”他问。

　　The Savage stared at them for a moment in silence.

　　野蛮人没有吱声，瞪了他一会儿，

　　Then in silence he rose to his feet, in silence slowly walked towards the door.

　　"Is she dead?" repeated the inquisitive¹² twin trotting¹³ at his side.

　　“他死了吗？”那好发问的多生子吧嗒吧嗒跟他走着，又问。

　　The Savage looked down at him and still without speaking pushed him away.

　　野蛮人低头望了望他，仍然没有说话，只把他推开了。

　　The twin fell on the floor and at once began to howl.

　　那孩子摔到地板上，立即嚎叫起来。

　　The Savage did not even look round.

　　野蛮人连头也没有回。
