Problems of Adolescents' Internet Addiction1
With the popularity and escalating3 of Internet in China, internet addiction among minors4 has been recognized as a wide spectrum5 of social problems, which permits of no delay.
A numerical example has revealed that about 8 million Chinese adolescents are suffering from the harassment6 of net addiction and 13% of the non-addicts7 show the disposition8. Strands9 of problems induced by net addiction are very shocking and our parents should beware. Some youth tend to skip school or detach from home. Some couldn't articulate good conversation with other fellow students. Living in their own castles, they are queer, stubborn and indifferent, even hostile to their familiar classmates and relatives; some form eccentric and versatile10 temperaments11; some indulge themselves on the internet and willingly degenerate12 (degraded) from day to night; some even racket (blackmail) timid classmates or even commit theft as a burglar, so as to make a blunder. Also, some adolescents are suffering from short eyesight, muscle jerks or other physiological13 handicaps.
Quoting from an expert, who once presumed in a commentary on the criteria14 of net addiction that one surfing the net more than 6 hours a day should be strong indicatives of net addiction. Adolescents would waste much of time in indulging on the internet, which contradicts with their duty of studies, therefore it is a problem with no bypassing.
After net addiction looms15 up, some schools have adopted versatile measures: some sent out special patrols to deport16 the students out of internet bars; some signed a petition to boycott17 net games; some took subsidiary measures such as publishing a concise18 "holiday brochure" to guide the students to actively19 enjoy their pastimes.
Psychologists deem that it should be an effective way to suppress and inhibit20 net addiction by assuring the standard of youth's access to net in permissible21 time.
Rather than denounce or detain him, the school and family should actively make a coalition22 once a young addict2 is discovered. Only under the dual23 guidance of school and family can conspicuous24 effects be achieved.
For those heavy addicts, guardians25 should escort them to go to school and come back home, offset26 their idle time with enjoyment27, dilute28 their dependence29 on the net.
Incidentally, parents should respect their children's right of privacy. To eradicate30 the problem of internet addiction, the optimum recipe is right guidance and scientific supervision31.
