Maktub, thought the boy.

“马克图布。”男孩心中默念。

The Englishman shook the boy: "Come on, ask her!"

英国人站起来，推了推男孩。“说话呀，问她呀！”

The boy stepped closer to the girl, and when she smiled, he did the same.

男孩走到少女跟前。她又微笑了一下，男孩也微微一笑。

"What's your name?" he asked.

“你叫什么名字？”他问。

"Fatima," the girl said, averting¹ her eyes.

“我叫法蒂玛。”少女两眼看着地面回答。

"That's what some women in my country are called."

“我的家乡也有一些女人叫这个名字。

"It's the name of the Prophet's daughter," Fatima said.

“这是先知女儿的名字。”法蒂玛说，

"The invaders² carried the name everywhere."

“是士兵们把这个名字带到了你的家乡。”

The beautiful girl spoke³ of the invaders with pride.

柔弱的少女带着骄傲的口吻谈到士兵。

The Englishman prodded⁴ him, and the boy asked her about the man who cured people's illnesses.

英国人在男孩旁边不停地催促，男孩遂问起绿洲里是否有能治百病的人。

"That's the man who knows all the secrets of the world," she said. "He communicates with the genies⁵ of the desert."

The genies were the spirits of good and evil.

精灵就是魔鬼。

The Englishman vanished, too, gone to find the alchemist.
