Goldman's own ordeal¹ began on Feb. 4 after Japanese health officials determined² that a passenger on the Diamond Princess from China

Authorities quarantined the boat in Yokohama harbor and began testing all 3,711 passengers and crew.

"We'd hear the sirens from the ambulances throughout the day and night, taking people to the hospital," says Carl.

By Feb. 16 at least 40 American passengers had been diagnosed with COVID-19, including Jerri Jorgensen;

But two hours into their flight back home on a U.S. Air Force cargo³ jet, Carl woke from a short nap and realized something was wrong.

He was moved to a quarantined area on the plane with eight other passengers who had recently come down with fevers.

After landing in California, the Goldmans were flown to Omaha, where Carl and other passengers with symptoms were transferred to the biocontainment unit.

Jeri, who still hasn’t contracted the virus, was put into mandatory⁴ quarantine several blocks away for 14 days. (She arrived back in LA on March 2.)

"My fever only lasted about 12 hours," says Carl, whose only treatment has been ibuprofen for the fever and Gatorade for dehydration⁵.

While he must remain in isolation⁷ until he tests negative for the virus on three consecutive⁸ days, he is passing the time by pacing back and forth⁹ in his room.

"Every 14 steps I hit a wall, then I turn around," he says. “Yesterday l got 9,000 steps in.”
