 I want you to know that the Shark, being very old and suffering from asthma¹ and heart trouble, was obliged to sleep with his mouth open. 我想让你们知道的是，这条鲨鱼太老了，又加上害了哮喘病和心脏病，睡觉只好张着嘴巴。

Because of this, Pinocchio was able to catch a glimpse of the sky filled with stars, as he looked up through the open jaws² of his new home. 正因如此，皮诺乔从新家自张开的嘴往上看，能够看到布满星星的天空。

"The time has come for us to escape," he whispered, turning to his father. “现在逃走正是时候，”他转过脸向他爸爸低声说。

"The Shark is fast asleep. The sea is calm and the night is as bright as day. “鲨鱼睡熟了。大海平静，黑夜亮如白昼。

Follow me closely, dear Father, and we shall soon be saved." 爸爸，您跟紧我，咱们马上就要得救了。”

No sooner said than done. They climbed up the throat of the monster till they came to that immense open mouth. 说干就干。他们顺着海怪的喉咙往上爬，来到张开的巨大无比的嘴巴。

There they had to walk on tiptoes, for if they tickled³ the Shark's long tongue he might awaken—and where would they be then? 在那他们不得不踮着脚尖走，因为如果他们把鲨鱼的大长舌头弄痒了，鲨鱼就会醒。到时候他们会在哪儿呢？

The tongue was so wide and so long that it looked like a country road. 这舌头又宽又长，像一条乡村大道。

The two fugitives⁴ were just about to dive into the sea when the Shark sneezed very suddenly and, as he sneezed, 他们两个逃跑的人正要跳到大海里去，可正在这时候，

he gave Pinocchio and Geppetto such a jolt⁵ that they found themselves thrown on their backs 鲨鱼突然打了个喷嚏给他俩震得摔倒了，

and dashed once more and very unceremoniously into the stomach of the monster. 又一次掉到了鲨鱼的肚子里。

To make matters worse, the candle went out and father and son were left in the dark. 更糟糕的是蜡烛灭了，父子两人就处于漆黑一片当中。

1 asthma
