Head lice are annoying, but according to new guidelines from a leading group of pediatricians, they don't actually make people sick, and children with the condition should not be kept away from school.

The guidelines, from the American Academy of Pediatrics, say that although head lice can cause itching¹, they are not known to spread disease, and the insects are not very likely to spread from one child to another within a classroom.

美国儿科学会的指导方针称尽管头虱让人皮肤发痒，但是它们并不会传播疾病，而且也不会轻易传染给同一个教室里的其他孩子。

Rather, it is usually direct head-to-head contact that spreads lice. For this reason, the guidelines say "no healthy child should be excluded from school or allowed to miss school time because of head lice or nits."

通常情况下，只有头对头的接触才会传染头虱。因此，指示称“健康的孩子决不能因为头虱或幼虱的原因被拒之校外或者错过学校时光。”
