Chinese are becoming more aware of the air pollution and its danger. An ordinary man in Beijing has been charting the change of air quality in the city for the last three years.  

 

Every morning, the first thing Zou Yi does is take a photo out of the window. He has been doing this for three years. The result is a calendar with a photographic record of the air quality of Beijing.

 

"When I put the photos I took in the first month together, I was shocked. And when the second month came out, I started to believe this could a meaningful thing to do," said Zou.

 

After he posted his calendar on Internet, it set off a wave of attention on air quality control, which gained him more support. He was approached by researchers who believe his photos are valuable data for air quality evaluation.

 

"Like many people, I complained a lot about the air quality at first. But then I ask myself, what can I do? The smog is the result of our activities," Zou said.

 

"We must face the fact. People are participating and reaching consensus. This is where I find the meaning of my efforts."

 

Zou now is preparing his last calendar of 2015. He has turned his website into a community of enthusiasts on air quality control, and now is involved in more environmental protection activities.

 

As Zou discovered through his own project of tracking the air quality, small acts by individuals can make a difference.
