An email alert from IT staff at the Marion Correctional Institution was the tip-off that an employee who was not on schedule, was trying to access the internet.

That’s what led officials to discover a network cable that ran into the ceiling and two computers hidden up there. Ohio Inspector¹ General Randall J. Meyer says the computers were meant to be recycled in a computer waste program and shouldn’t have left there:

One prisoner tried to use the computers to steal the identity of another inmate³, submit credit card applications and commit tax fraud.

In total, five were found guilty of using the computers and have been moved to other prisons.
