M: Really?
W. Yes. Pollution is one of the serious problems we have now and we should think of this.
M: I see. But if we can reduce12 pollution, I believe things will get better.
W: I hope so.
(Text 5)
As a rule, girls and boys have to go to sleep because someone says it is time for bed. But if you stay up long past bedtime13, you discover that you would rather go to sleep than do anything else in the world.
People have made experiments with staying awake for long periods14 of time. After two days they were easy to anger15 and they didn’t think very well. Your brain16 is like a shop where waste materials pile17 up because of all the work that goes on. At night while you are asleep the work slows down. And there is a chance for cleaners to carry the waste away.
The older you are, the less sleep you seem to need. But even the oldest person needs several hours a day. Animals are different. A rat9 sleeps about half the time. An elephant gets along with a two or three hour nap18. Elephants and horses can sleep standing19 up. Sharks hardly seem to sleep at all. They just doze20 for a few minutes now and then. Bears sleep all winter.
