The banks say a meeting with treasury¹ officials today about a proposed new tax has left them with more questions than answers. Anna Bligh, from the Australian Bankers' association, says "the Government is playing fast and loose" with important parts of the financial system. The Treasurer² Scott Morrison says he's confident the banks can absorb the cost of a new tax.

A judge has ruled the detention³ of juveniles⁴ at Victoria's maximum security Barwon Prison is unlawful. The State Government moved the offenders⁵ to the adult jail, after riots at two youth centres caused extensive damage. Supreme⁶ Court Justice John Dixon found they've been held in lock-down for up to 23 hours a day and often had to be handcuffed when released from their cells.

Jason Chaffetz says an existing Justice Department investigation⁸ regarding the FBI's actions before last year's election should be expanded to examine recent events.
