President Donald Trump¹ says Turkish President Erdogan is offering assurance that the cease-fire Turkey agreed to Thursday has not broken down. The deal is drawing plenty of criticism, with a top official in Europe calling it a "demand for the capitulation of the Kurds," and French Presiddent Emmanuel Macron calling Turkey's operation "madness."

An explosion at a Mosque² in eastern Afghanistan has left more than 60 worshipers dead and at least 36 others wounded. It comes one day after a U.N. report said that Afghan civilians³ are dying in record numbers in the country's ongoing⁴ conflict.

Government security forces aborted⁵ an effort in northern Mexico to capture a son of imprisoned⁶ drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman after they found themselves outgunned in a shootout with cartel gunmen. Officials say Thursday's gunbattle left at least 8 people dead and more than 20 wounded.

NASA astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir made history early Friday as the world's first all-female spacewalking team. They worked on the international space station's power grid⁷ and then took a call from President Trump.
