He had, however, learned much that is not taught in books. He knew how to take care of himself in the open,

outdoor boy learns from country life. Best of all, he had grown tall and strong and hardy¹ from his life in the open air,

Washington's first school was not much more than a hut in the woods,

in charge of a schoolmaster who knew very little more than his pupils.

In those days it was difficult to find good school-teachers in Virginia.
