木偶奇遇记 第52期:狐狸和猫(3)

 　　"My friend is too modest to answer. I'll answer for him. About an hour ago, we met an old wolf on the road.

　　“我的朋友太谦虚了，因此不愿回答，我来替他回答吧。一个钟头以前，我们在路上碰到一只老狼。

　　He was half starved and begged for help. Having nothing to give him, what do you think my friend did out of the kindness of his heart?

　　它快饿死了，求我们帮助它。可我们没有什么好给它的，你猜我这朋友出于善良之心做出什么事情来啦？

　　With his teeth, he bit off the paw¹ of his front foot and threw it at that poor beast, so that the might have something to eat."As he spoke², the Fox wiped off a tear.

　　它竟从自己前腿上咬下一只爪子，扔给这只可怜的野兽吃。”狐狸一面说着一面擦眼泪。

　　Pinocchio, almost in tears himself, whispered in the Cat's ear: "If all the cats were like you, how lucky the mice would be!"

　　皮诺乔几乎也感动得要流泪了，他在猫耳边轻轻地说：“如果所有的猫都像你，耗子可多幸运啊！”

　　"And what are you doing here?" the Fox asked the Marionette³.

　　“可你这会儿在这里干吗呢？”狐狸问木偶说。

　　"I am waiting for my father, who will be here at any moment now."

　　“我在等我爸爸，他随时可能到这儿来。”

　　"And your gold pieces?"-"I still have them in my pocket, except one which I spent at the Inn⁴ of the Red Lobster⁵."

　　“那你的金币呢？” “还在我的口袋里，除了有一个我在红灯旅馆花掉了。”

　　"To think that those four gold pieces might become two thousand tomorrow. Why don't you listen to me? Why don't you sow them in the Field of Wonders?"

　　“想想四个金币到明天就能变两千个，你为什么不听我的话？你为什么不到‘奇迹宝地’，把它们种下去呢？”

　　"Today it is impossible. I'll go with you some other time."-"Another day will be too late," said the Fox.

　　“今天不行，我改天再跟你去。” “改天就太迟了，”狐狸说。

　　"Why?"-"Because that field has been bought by a very rich man, and today is the last day that it will be open to the public."

　　“为什么？” “因为这块地给一位富豪买去了，今天最后一天对公众开放。”
