发现

The word"discovery" literally¹ means,

"发现"一词，字面上是指，

uncovering something that's hidden from view.

揭开某种实现以外的隐藏的事物。

But what really happens is a change in the viewer.

不过其实是观察者自身发生了变化。

The familiar offers comfort few can resist,

很少人能抗拒熟悉事物带来的舒适，

and fewer still want to disturb.

愿意扰乱这种舒适的人更少。

But as relatively² recent inventions such as the telescope and microscope have taught us,

然而，正如这些较为近期的发明望远镜，显微镜揭示给我们的一样，

the unknown has many layers.

未知事物具有多种层次。

Every truth has geological strata³,

每个事实都有地质层次。

and you can't have an orthodoxy without a heresy⁴.

没有异端就无所谓正统。

The moment a newborn opens its eyes, discovery begins.

I learned this with a laugh one morning after delivering a calf⁵.

1 literally   

adv.照字面意义，逐字地；确实

• He translated the passage literally.他逐字逐句地翻译这段文字。
• Sometimes she would not sit down till she was literally faint.有时候，她不走到真正要昏厥了，决不肯坐下来。

2 relatively   

adv.比较...地，相对地

参考例句：

• The rabbit is a relatively recent introduction in Australia.兔子是相对较新引入澳大利亚的物种。
• The operation was relatively painless.手术相对来说不痛。

3 strata   

n.地层（复数）；社会阶层

参考例句：

• The older strata gradually disintegrate.较老的岩层渐渐风化。
• They represent all social strata.他们代表各个社会阶层。

4 heresy   

n.异端邪说；异教

参考例句：

• We should denounce a heresy.我们应该公开指责异端邪说。
• It might be considered heresy to suggest such a notion.提出这样一个观点可能会被视为异端邪说。

5 calf   

n.小牛，犊，幼仔，小牛皮

参考例句：

• The cow slinked its calf.那头母牛早产了一头小牛犊。
• The calf blared for its mother.牛犊哞哞地高声叫喊找妈妈。

6 fluffy   

adj.有绒毛的，空洞的

参考例句：

• Newly hatched chicks are like fluffy balls.刚孵出的小鸡像绒毛球。
• The steamed bread is very fluffy.馒头很暄。
