In 2010 his ship was hijacked¹ on a trip between Dubai and Mogadishu by Somali pirates. They killed one crew member and subjected the rest to mental and physical torture. The pirates grew increasingly frustrated² by their failure to contact the ship's owner, and so they began calling Jawaid's wife, Shahnaz. Shahnaz and her daughters Nareman and Mishal began a public campaign to secure the release of the crew. After agonizingly drawn-out negotiations³, the pirates eventually freed seven hostages, including Captain Jawaid.
