Well, when an economy plunges¹ into a downturn, we know you could expect unemployment to rise, businesses to struggle as demand falls and investment to drop. Now normally economists² assume these effects will be reversed as the economy recovers, but it now seems the consequences of periods of economic stress can be with us for many years.
