Uber launched a small fleet of self-driving cars in San Francisco on Wednesday, but the California Department of Motor Vehicles told the ride-sharing company that without a permit it was breaking the law.

In a conference call with the press on Friday, Uber's vice¹ president said, "The cars are on the road today." According to Uber, the law doesn't apply to them because there are human drivers monitoring the cars which means that technically² they aren't autonomous³ vehicles.
