I beg leave to thank you for the extremely kind and appreciative1 manner in which you havereceived the toast of Science. It is the more grateful to me to hear that toast proposed in anassembly of this kind, because I have noticed of late years a great and growing tendency amongthose who were once jestingly said to have been born in a pre-scientific age to look upon scienceas an invading and aggressive force, which if it had its own way would oust2 from the universe allother pursuit. I think there are many persons who look upon this new birth of our times as a sort ofmonster rising out of the sea of modern thought with the purpose of devouring4 the Andromeda ofart. And now and then a Perseus, equipped with the shoes of swiftness of the ready writer, withthe cap of invisibility of the editorial article, and it may be with the Medusa head of vituperation,shows himself ready to try conclusions with the scientific dragon.
Sir, I hope that Perseus will think better of it; first, for his own sake, because the creature ishard of head, strong of jaw5, and for some time past has shown a great capacity for going over andthrough whatever comes in his way: and secondly6, for the sake of justice, for I assure you, of myown personal knowledge that if left alone, the creature is a very debonair7 and gentle monster. Asfor the Andromeda of art, he has the tenderest respect for that lady, and desires nothing more thanto see her happily settled and annually8 producing a flock of such charming children as those wesee about us.
But putting parables10 aside, I am unable to understand how any one with knowledge ofmankind can imagine that the growth of science can threaten the development of art in any of itsforms. If I understand the matter at all, science and art are the obverse and reverse of Nature'smedal; the one expressing the eternal order of things, in terms of feeling, the other in terms ofthought. When men no longer love nor hate; when suffering causes no pity, and the tale of greatdeeds ceases to thrill, when the lily of the field shall seem no longer more beautifully arrayed thanSolomon in all his glory, and the awe11 has vanished from the snow-capped peak and deep ravine,then indeed science may have the world to itself, but it will not be because the monster hasdevoured art, but because one side of human nature is dead, and because men have lost the half oftheir ancient and present attributes.

1. assure用来表示向某人保证某事将要发生，既可以用来确证某事，也可以表示使某人确信。assure的宾语通常是人或人称代词，所以不能直接搭配that从句。其常用结构为assuresb. of sth./as。
例 He assured us of his ability to solve the problem.
他向我们保证他有能力解决这个问题。
例 We booked early to assure ourselves of good seats.
我们及早订座以保证我们能得到好座位。
assure后还可跟抽象名词作宾语，此时与ensure同义，表示确保。

2. no longer中的longer是副词long的比较级，long有“在某一时刻以后”之意，着重表示时间的不再延续，意为“如今不再”。no longer等于not... any longer。与之容易混淆的no more中的more是many、much的比较级，more有again之意，着重表示数量或程度的减少，意为“再也没有更多（大）的数量（程度）”。no more等于not... any more。
no longer / not... any longer表示不再继续或再现过去某一时刻发生或存在而一直延续的动作/状态，常用于过去时、现在时或将来时的句子中。
例 He was no longer a thief.
他不再是小偷了。
例 When there is no gravity, our feet no longer stay on the ground.

no more / not... any more表示再也不重复过去反复发生的动作，常用于过去时或将来时的句子中。
