　　They are probably related to identification of the animal, so that potential rival males can identify that there is a male who is going after your female, the ones you are interested in.

　　Or they can also tell the female that you are the right age and you are of interest.

　　The extreme appearance of the Majungasaurus may also have been something to do with its environment.

　　Any time we have a small population of animals isolated² in a small area, you can't help but get inbreeding between family members.

　　Over long periods of time and numerous generations, we start to see mutations caused by inbreed.

　　Now, in the case of Majungasaurus, so few skeletons have been found and we really don't know what normal look like for this particular species.

　　But we can certainly suggest that because they lived on an island and it was separated from other similar dinosaurs, its ugly face could have been the end result of mutations.

　　The Majungasaurus was small compared to many of the dinosaurs of the Jurassic period, but it was still substantial.

　　Now, that's important to know because most theropods, most meat eating dinosaurs have very cognatic skulls⁷ where their skulls would actually move while they are feeding,helping to protect their teeth from breaking, the bones of their skull from breaking, and also their jaws⁸ would expend⁹ when they open their mouth.
