National Australia Bank is the third of the big four banks to raise the interest rate on its standard variable home loans.

The interest rate on NAB's variable home loans will increase by 17 basis points to 5.6 per cent, from november 12.

The commonwealth¹ bank, put up its standard variable mortgage rates by 15 basis points yesterday and Westpac, which increased its variable home loan rates by 20 basis points last week.

All have blamed regulatory changes for the move.

The banks argue that stricter capital requirements mean their costs have gone up.

Banking² stocks are rallying, with an increase in rates tipped to help lift their profitability in the next year.
