On Tuesday, President Barack Obama committed to take on the United States' growing heroin¹ and prescription² epidemic³ by devoting resources to prevention and treatment, rather than to “war on drugs” policies.

Obama said at a conference in Atlanta, "For too long we’ve viewed drug addiction⁴ through the lens of criminal justice.

In his speech, Obama also talked about a nearly completed Human Services Department rule that would treat substance abuse and mental health services such as medical and surgical⁵ benefits under Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program programs.
